This is at Spencer's shower just before Avery :) |
Some friends were coming over to watch the season finale of Survivor and I got up to get the door and felt light headed. It seemed like deja vu. I got this weird look and started to cry. Chris had no idea until I blurted it out after our friends had left. We got 2 test the next day, as I didn't believe the first one. We couldn't believe it. We were pregnant again. This time around we had no idea how to tell our parents. chris' parents were passing Spencer back and forth and we blurted out that in 8 months they wouldn't have fight over who go to hold the baby, they could each hold one. They were shocked. As were my parents. I had no idea how to tell them until I tried and couldn't get it out because I was crying so badly. They were so supportive and told me it would be like having twins. I was skeptical, but a little reassured.
I had to figure out what to do about work. I needed 600 hours in order to qualify for another year of maternity leave. In January I went back to work full time and my mom watched Spencer. It was really handy that she lived down the street from where I worked because they would walk down to visit me almost every day. I couldn't imagine having to go back to work after just a few months. It was awful. I had a very routine pregnancy, except that I was SO EXHAUSTED. Working all day then taking care of an infant was so overwhemlming. With my first pregnancy I could nap whenever I was tired, however this time around I couldn't nap at all. I ended up getting my mat leave hours in early, and was able to finish work around the last week of April. Avery was due the 3rd of May, so I didn't want to go early like spencer. As of the end of April I was already 3 cm dilated. My doctor told me not to go very far. 11 days later and still nothing.
3 days prior to baby time :) |
May 14th I had a doctors appointment at 5pm. My doctor said if nothing happened within the next couple of days, they would induce me the next day. I dropped Spencer off at my parents and went home to get one last good nights sleep. Chris got home around 6pm and we had dinner and Chris had a beer, took a muscle relaxer (he had worked a lot of over time and it was catching up to him) and went to bed. I laid down next to him, and all of a sudden it felt like Avery punched me from the inside. All at once my water broke. I hurried into our ensuite because I didn't want to wreck the carpet and I stood in the tub. We got into the truck and started out to the hospital. I probably should have drove as Chris was exhausted, but oh well :) On the way to the hospital Chris was driving very cautiously, but I noticed my contractions were less than 4 minutes apart, I told him to step on it. By the time we got to the hospital they told me to wait to be admitted and to have a seat in the waiting room. Seriously, I wanted to shake her head. By the time I got to the delivery room, the contractions were about 2 minutes apart. The poor woman who was in there all day and still hadn't delivered was moved out and I took over the room. I kept thinking of Rachel from friends when everyone kept delivering except her. I was one of those other women :) An anesthesiologist came in and told me it was too late for an epidural and I cried. I didn't think I could do it without the drugs. The nurses noticed Chris was looking a little pale and made him sit down and got him some juice and a cookie. All I could think of was "HEEELLLLOOOOO"" I'm trying to deliver a baby. 3 pushes, 10 minutes, and A LOT of swearing, and she was here. Avery was our girls name, and Oliver was our boys name. Avery fit perfectly. Our sweet blessing.
